Impetigo - Symptoms and Impetigo Treatment

Impetigo is a comon infectious skin disease that is usually caused by staphylococcal and sometimes by streptococcal bacteria. In Impetigo, inflamed puffy patches appear on the skin usually on the face, scalp and neck, pus, seeping from infected blisters or pustules form a crust over this. Impetigo forms round, crusted, oozing spots that grow larger day by day. Impetigo disorder is commonly seen in children and is spread by scratching the infected areas and then touching a part of teh skin that is not affected or the skin of another person.

Occasionally blisters can form in areas affected by impetigo when it is called bullous impetigo. Impetigo responds rapidly to treatment with antibiotics. Impetigo is seldom serious, and minor infections may clear on their own in two to three weeks. Impetigo may affect skin anywhere on the body but commonly occurs around the nose and mouth, hands, and forearms.

Impetogo Treatment and Prevention

If anyone in your family does develop impetigo, a few simple measures can help keep the infection from spreading. Prevent impetigo infection from spreading among family members by using antibacterial soap and making sure that each family member uses a separate towel. Topical antibiotics are less effective than systemic antibiotics. You can stop soaking the impetigo when crusts no longer form. When the skin is healed, stop the antibiotic ointment.
