Important Reasons To Brush Properly

Most people don’t know it, if you don’t properly brush your teeth it can lead to tooth decay and inflammation of the gums. In order to maintain healthy gums there are several steps you should take to ensure proper care. The first thing to do is to select a brush with soft nylon bristles. The softness of the bristles is very important in order to prevent damage to your gums and enamel. The toothbrush selected should easily fit in your hand and be paired with a comfortable grip. The head of the toothbrush should be small to effectively reach between the teeth and fit into the oral cavity.

Second, is ensuring that you undertake proper maintenance of the toothbrush. Clean it after use by rinsing it with the water. Also, ensure that you rub the toothbrush with your fingers to remove any detritus and particles which have lodged between the brushes. If left in the brush they attract bacteria and encourage infestation by microorganisms which can be detrimental to oral health. Store the toothbrush in a dry and uncovered place in an upright position. This ensures that it dries out and does not form any bacterial colonies. If you use a cup to store the toothbrush ensure you regularly clean it. Failure to do all of this encourages the formation of bacterial colonies on the toothbrush.

Third, select good fluoride toothpaste. The fluoride in the toothpaste prevents the buildup of plaque and tartar on the teeth. Fluoride if ingested is harmful to your health. It is for this reason that you must remember to spit out the foam formed when brushing your teeth. Fourth, wet the toothbrush with water before applying the toothpaste. This is important not just to ensure that the toothpaste foams in the mouth. The reason why it is so important is because it softens the bristles of the toothbrush and reduces the chance of you hurting yourself while brushing.

Fifth, did you know that brushing your teeth going backwards is harmful to your health? You should actually brush frontwards. This makes sure that you do not push dirt into the back of the mouth which is harder to reach. The conventional motion of backwards brushing pushes the dirt dislodged into the back of the mouth. This can stick on the harder to reach molars and premolars at the back of the mouth. The end result is that the teeth at the back may decay even while your front teeth are healthy and shiny. Furthermore, the brushing should be done in an up and down motion not sideways as most people tend to. Brushing up and down helps dislodge food particles caught between the teeth.

Sixth, remember to brush the roof of the mouth (palate) and the tongue. Most people miss these areas causing formation of bacteria. Seventh, when finished gurgle water and spit it out. The gurgling dislodges any food particles that may have been missed. This is especially important to remove the food particles at the back of the mouth.  Lastly, you should not brush immediately after a meal.
