Amoxicillin: an overview

Amoxicillin treats the various bacterial infections in the body.. It is a type of penicillin antibiotic.  Some of the common infections which Amoxicillin treats are -

  • infection in the bladder
  • salmonella infection
  • ear infection
  • gonorrhea

In addition to these infections, it also treats E.coli and pneumonia.

Note: Amoxicillin is used to treat stomach ulcers. It is combined with antibiotics like  clarithromycin. The patient is given ansoprazole when he/he is given this combination ( Amoxicillin + clarithromycin ) for treating stomach ulcers.
However, remember thatmoxicillin does not treat all type of stomach ulcers. It only cures those ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection.

Understand taking this medicine is quite risky. Thus, you need to be extra careful before you start the dose of Amoxicillin. Here are a few factors you should consider:

You should not take in Amoxicillin if you are allergic to:

  • oxacillin
  • ampicillin
  • penicillin
  • dicloxacillin

Note: all the above-mentioned names are different types of  penicillin antibiotic.

It is advisable to consult the doctor before taking this medicine. Make sure to inform the doctor about your allergies to:

  • Omnicef
  •  Keflex
  • Cefzil

Reconsider taking amoxicillin  if you suffer from these diseases:
General allergy
kidney disease
asthma
diarrhea
liver problem
mononucleosis

Side effects
You might develop an allergic reaction to amoxicillin. In such a situation, immediately consult your doctor. Some of the common allergies you might develop are:

breathing difficulty
swelling of different body parts – face, throat and lips
hives

There are some serious side effects of amoxicillin. If you suffer from any of these, stop taking the medicine immediately. Here is a lowdown on these symptoms:

white patches in  mouth and lips
blistering
skin rash
dark colored urine
joint pain
skin peeling
fever
weakness in muscle
bleeding from mouth, nose and rectum
red spots on the skin
eyes getting yellowed

Less serious side effects include:

headache
stomach pain
hair on the tongue
discharge from the vagina

Do not take an overdose of amoxicillin. If you miss taking the first dose, leave it. Remember taking excess dose will harm your body.

In case you do the mistake of taking an overdose of amoxicillin, immediately go to the doctor.

Possible symptoms of overdose include:

skin rashes
frequent urination
change in behaviour
black-out

Make sure that you take the medicine Amoxicillin  according to the doctor recommendation. Do not increase or decrease the dose by yourself. In case of any confusion, it’s better to follow the usage direction on the label.

Take a special spoon to measure the dose of the liquid you are taking. You can easily get the dose measuring spoon in any of the pharmacies.

You can take the medicine in several ways:
with water
with fruit juice
with milk
directly

You get chewable tablets of amoxicillin. Make sure you chew this tablet properly before swallowing it.

Remember to avoid any side effects of Amoxicillin, you need to frequently go for a blood test. In some cases, the doctor will also test your liver.
